English GM Nigel Short was one of the most successful chess players of the 1980s and 1990s and was still in the top 100 well into his 50s. The peak of his career came in 1993, when he challenged for the World Championship in a match against Garry Kasparov.
Born in 1965, he is an English grandmaster who at the young age of 10 defeated Viktor Korchnoi in a simul. Celebrated by the British media as a «chess prodigy», Short entered the British championship for the first time at the age of 12. In the Dortmund Youth World Cup in 1980 he was second, behind Garry Kasparov. Thirteen years later they would face each other in a duel for the absolute world title. Previously, Short had eliminated Jonathan Speelman, Boris Gelfand and Anatoly Karpov from the 1991/92 FIDE candidate cycle (6:4).
In the candidates’ final he also beat Jan Timman (8: 5) and thus qualified to challenge Kasparov for the title. However, both gave up playing under the auspices of FIDE and founded the so-called PCA (Professional Chess Association) Short was defeated by Kasparov in the PCA world championship in London in 1003 by 7.5:12.5.
A result that was surprisingly clear, since in his young years he had shown what an excellent dueling player he was by winning 7: 1 against the nationalized American Lev Alburt. He also came first in the strong four-run tournaments in Amsterdam in 1988, 1992 and 1993. Other notable tournament victories are Wijk aan Zee 1986 and 1987 (tied on points with Viktor Korchnoi), Reykjavik 1987, Groningen 1996, Budapest 2003.
