Win with the French! A complete, robust repertoire for Black the french defence hits the sweet spot between soundness and practicality, and remains one of Black’s most
popular defences at all levels. Win with the French! offers a complete, robust repertoire for Black after 1.e4 e6.
Win with the French!
Elite theoretician and author Vassilios Kotronias presents a two-pronged approach in the most critical main lines, with a theoretically bulletproof, professional-grade
option accompanied by a sound yet combative choice to generate winning chances with less memorization. This versatile approach, combined with thoughtful advice about typical
themes and pawn structures, makes Win with the French! the ideal modern guide to this classic chess opening.
Grandmaster Vassilios Kotronias is a ten-time Greek Champion with a peak ranking of 44th in the world, as well as a renowned theoretician and 1.e4 player.
After spending many decades trying unsuccessfully to break the French Defence, he is ready to share his extensive insights on why it’s a great opening to play with Black.
If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them!
During the course of my chess career, I’ve come across many “hard nuts to crack” when playing my beloved 1.e4.
Two outstanding cases were the Berlin Defence in the Ruy Lopez and the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian. I can recall the feeling of banging my head against a wall while trying
to find an advantage against these openings – which was, of course, an impossible task. However, much to White’s consolation, these openings could at least be classified as over
-elaborate and energy-demanding from Black, as they require a huge number of lines to be memorized, and tons of tactical and strategic nuances to be understood.
Win with the French!
I can think of many funny titles I could publish like “Enjoy your Poisoned Pawn” or “Manhattan we may take; Berlin, not”. Nevertheless, such White repertoire works could end up
disappointing the readers as much as myself: a well-armed White player can’t really hope to overcome the statistics-derived expectation of a 55% score
– and that’s after draining all your energy on preparation. The flipside? Black has to exhibit monstrous levels of memorization and excellent technique to hope for a positive score.
