Think Like a Super-GM by Michael Adams and Philip Hurtado
Think Like a Super-GM is a unique collaboration combining the chess insights of an elite
grandmaster with a scientific investigation into thinking at the chess board.
40 chess puzzles were shown to a panel of players ranging from occasional club players up to Super-
GM and co-author Michael Adams. Researcher Philip Hurtado recorded not only the moves
chosen, but also the detailed thought processes of every player in order to shed light on the mystery
as to what exactly defines superior chess strength.
Think Like a Super-GM This book offers a unique opportunity for readers to not only solve the
puzzles, but also compare their thinking to that of club players, strong amateurs, IMs, GMs and
Michael Adams himself. With an additional Bonus Puzzle section and a fascinating Eyetracker
experiment showing where different players focused their attention on the board, this is a chess
improvement book like no other.
Think Like a Super-GM by Michael Adams and Philip Hurtado
GM Michael Adams is a World Championship finalist and long-time British number one, with a
peak ranking of 4th in the world.
In 1989, he obtained the title of Grand Master . In 1993, he shared first place (with Anand ) in the
Groningen Professional Chess Association (PCA) Candidates tournament. In the knockout matches
he is knocked out in the second round by Anand . In 1994 he played in the FIDE version of the
candidates’ tournament, being eliminated by Borís Gélfand in the first round. In 1997, he participates
in the FIDE World Championship, which for the first time was held in knockouts instead of the
classic format.
Most of the best players in the world participated in this event (with the exception
of Kasparov , Kramnik and Kamsky). Adams reached the final where he was defeated by Anand . In
this final matchup, the first four normal-paced games ended in a draw, as well as the next four fast-
paced games. Anand was only able to win the games within 5 minutes. In 2004 , again Adams
reached the final of the FIDE version of the world championship. This time he loses
to Kasimdzhanov , again in rapid games, after finishing the first 6 games at normal pace 3-3.
Philip Hurtado is an engineer, physicist, statistician and passionate amateur chess player.
