The Italian Renaissance – II: The Main Lines by Martyn Kravtsiv in this, the second book in his two-
volume work, GM Martyn Kravtsiv shines the spotlight on the Italian Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6
3.Bc4). Most chess players learn the basics of this opening as beginners, yet it contains enough depth
and complexity to provide the world’s best players with a rich and ever-evolving battleground.
The Italian Renaissance – II
Though written unmistakably from White’s perspective, this work takes a different approach from
that of a typical repertoire book. Rather than filling valuable pages analysing rare, inferior and
generally irrelevant options, the author delves deep into the most important main lines, explaining
the key move-order details and providing White with a series of well-researched ideas which will
force your opponents to solve difficult problems at the board.

The Main Lines by Martyn Kravtsiv
“There have been many decent books recently on the Italian […] but this one is clearly my favourite.
It’s a real grandmaster repertoire – Kravtsiv doesn’t shun extremely deep analysis of some
middlegame positions – but there is a lot of grandmaster judgement in the lines too. Kravtsiv always
has an eye for a position that his engines consider equal but that might be easier for White’s game
and I have to say that I agreed with a lot of his evaluations. Excellent work – 4 stars!”
“In this companion volume Kravtsiv moves on to his main repertoire recommendation, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3
Nc6 3.Bc4, meeting 3…Bc5 with 4.c3 Nf6 5.d3, the Giuoco Piano and which 2.Bc4 can easily
transpose into. Once again the coverage is cutting edge with Kravtsiv also showing how to handle the
3…Nf6 4.d3 lines where Black omits …Bc5.”
