Vinay Bhat’s remarkable chess career began with him becoming a National Master at the age of 10 and an International Master at 15. At this time, this was a record for the youngest American IM since Bobby Fischer.
Notably, he became the youngest International Master in U.S. history at 15 years and 10 months.
After a break from chess, Bhat returned to regular play in 2008. In April of that year, he was awarded the prestigious 2008 Samford Fellowship, which supports promising American chess players under the age of twenty-five through coaching, competition, and study materials.
Bhat’s pursuit of the Grandmaster title bore fruit in October 2008 when he crossed the 2500 FIDE rating threshold, earning him the title of International Grandmaster. His three Grandmaster norms were obtained through tournaments in Qingdao (China, 2002), Balaguer (Spain, 2006), and Balaguer (Spain, 2007).
